Your Community Options

There are different types of options when it comes to retiring comfortably, and it's important that you know what those options are, as well as how they will benefit you. There are retirement homes and there are 55+ retirement apartments. Retirement homes are usually buildings where seniors live as a group, but have their own rooms. Retirement apartments are where you have a little bit more privacy and room. Deciding which would be the best for you is important before you begin your search. 

Independent Living

These are specialized facilities for seniors who may not need daily assistance or medical care. They are made up of separated apartments that tend to include a kitchen, they have all sizes from studios to two bedrooms.  Depending on the facilities they may include utilities, meals, housekeeping, basic maintenance and scheduled transportation for errands and doctor visits that may be included in the monthly rent. Many though tend to charge all those amenities separately. For the most part a lot of these communities tend to have a social aspect with there always being activities to interact with other members of the community. 

Assisted Living

These are mainly for the seniors that may not need full time around the clock care but may need a certain level of assistance with some of their daily tasks. That may include help getting dressed, and bathing and toileting assistance. Also some may provide medication reminder assistance. 

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are for those seniors or patients that may need extensive medical attention and is not too far off from the care you would receive from a hospital. Many still maintain the concept of community but also with the hospital feel. The con of nursing homes is that they tend to be extremely expensive with the price averaging being around $90,000 for the year. With the demand being so high to secure a spot in nursing homes they tend to have waiting lists.
